Full-sound harmoniums for leading chant.
Kirtan is call-and-response chanting, and the harmonium is its heartbeat. It holds the drone, carries the melody, and gives the group a steady pitch to follow. A good kirtan harmonium needs enough range for a lead singer and group, a full sound to fill a room, and bellows that keep breathing through long chants. Every model below is handcrafted in India, tuned to A=440 Hz as standard and checked before dispatch.

What makes a harmonium good for kirtan?
Range: 39 vs 42 keys. 39 keys (3¼ octaves) covers almost every kirtan melody. 42 keys (3½ octaves) gives the left hand room for low drone notes while the right hand plays melody. That’s helpful when you lead without other instruments.
Coupler. When engaged, a coupler sounds the note an octave higher (or lower) along with the one you play. The result is a bigger, choir-like sound that carries over a singing group.
Bass and male reeds. All our kirtan models have bass and male brass reed banks. Bass gives warmth and depth, male gives clarity. Use the stops to blend them.
Drones. Drone stops sustain the tonic (Sa) and fifth (Pa) without holding a key down, which frees your hands for melody.
Bellows. Seven-fold or multi-fold bellows hold more air, so you can play long phrases with fewer pumps.

- Brass manjira and bronze manjira

Frequently asked questions
What is the best harmonium for kirtan?
For leading a group, choose a 42-key harmonium with coupler, such as our extra-height models. For home chanting, a 39-key coupler model such as the Magic Voice is plenty.
Do I need a coupler for kirtan?
It isn’t essential, but it makes the sound fuller and helps the harmonium carry over a group.
Are these harmoniums tuned to play with guitar?
Yes. All are tuned to A=440 Hz as standard.
Can I travel with a kirtan harmonium?
Yes. Choose a folding traveler model; they fold into a suitcase-style box.
Is a kirtan harmonium different from a classical harmonium?
The instrument is the same. Kirtan players usually prefer a fuller sound (couplers, more stops), while classical singers often value precise tuning and a clear male reed.
