Handcrafted in India. Tuned to A440. Shipped to the USA.
From Brooklyn kirtan circles to studios in Austin and yoga teacher trainings in California, American musicians are learning the Indian harmonium. RagaLoom makes it simple to order one directly from India. Every instrument is handcrafted by Indian makers, tuned to A440 Hz (the concert pitch used by American pianos, guitars and recordings), checked before dispatch, and shipped to your door. You see prices in US dollars at checkout.
Why American players choose an A440 harmonium
Many older or village-made harmoniums are tuned “by ear”, which sounds lovely alone but clashes with a guitar, keyboard or backing track. RagaLoom harmoniums are tuned to A=440 Hz as standard, so they play in tune with:
- guitarists and bassists in a kirtan band
- a digital piano or DAW when you record at home
- tanpura and shruti apps set to the default 440 reference
Which harmonium suits you?
If you travel to retreats, festivals or teaching gigs, a folding or mini model makes sense. Our Travel Harmoniums collection includes the Teak Mini Traveler Harmonium (32 keys, 2¾ octaves) and the full-range Teak Folding Traveler Harmonium with 9 stops and coupler.
If you lead kirtan or chant at home, a 39- or 42-key instrument gives you room for both low drones and higher melodies. Popular picks are the Magic Voice Mahogany Harmonium (39 keys, 9 stops, coupler) and the Pro-Grade Teak Harmonium (11 stops, five drones).
If you are a complete beginner, start with a compact keyboard. It costs less and is easier to pump. See the Mini Magic Teak Harmonium or read our Harmonium Buying Guide for Beginners.

Complete your setup
Many American kirtan players pair a harmonium with a drone or rhythm instrument:
- Shruti boxes for a steady drone under your voice or harmonium
- Brass manjira hand cymbals and sheesham wood khartal for group chanting
- A bolt-tuned dholak for bhajan rhythm
Caring for your harmonium in the US climate
Climate varies a lot across the US, from humid Florida summers to dry, heated Colorado winters. Keep your instrument away from radiators, air vents and direct sun. Store it in its bag and play it regularly so the bellows stay supple. Our guide How to Care for Your Harmonium has a seasonal checklist.
