Handcrafted Indian harmoniums, shipped to Australia.

Australia’s harmonium scene has a character of its own. Kirtan and mantra gatherings thrive in Byron Bay and the Sunshine Coast, Indian community bhajan groups meet in Sydney’s west and Melbourne’s south-east, and sound-healing practitioners in Perth and Adelaide use the harmonium alongside singing bowls. Wherever you play, RagaLoom ships handcrafted instruments from India. Choose AUD in the currency selector to see local prices.

The RagaLoom standard

  • Handcrafted in India, in teak, mahogany-colour and dark oak cabinets.
  • A440 Hz tuning as standard, so the instrument plays in tune with guitars, keyboards, didgeridoo drones tuned to concert pitch, and recordings.
  • Checked before dispatch. Every instrument is checked before it is packed.

Which harmonium for which Aussie player?

Festival and retreat musicians Folding instruments survive car boots and camper vans better than tall standard cabinets. Pick from our Travel Harmoniums. The Teak Folding Traveler (9 stops, coupler, gig bag) gives you full 3½-octave range on the road.

Sound healers and meditation teachers For long, steady drones under your voice, drone stops matter more than extra keys. The Compact Dulcetina Harmonium has five drone stops, and the Pro-Grade Teak Harmonium combines five drones with 11 stops. Many healers add a shruti box as well. See Harmonium vs Shruti Box.

Community bhajan and kirtan leaders The Mahogany Standard Harmonium (39 keys, 7 stops) and the Magic Voice (39 keys, 9 stops, coupler) are dependable full-size choices.

Kids and first-time learners The Mini Magic Mahogany Harmonium (32 keys) is compact and comes with a carry bag.

Heat, humidity and coastal air

Tropical Queensland humidity, dry inland heat and salty coastal air can all affect wooden reed instruments. Never leave a harmonium in a parked car. Keep it out of direct sun, and store it in its bag in a room with stable temperature. If humidity is high, play it often to keep the reeds moving. Our care guide explains more.

Beyond the harmonium: instruments for Australian ensembles

Kirtan bands at Australian festivals often mix Indian and Western instruments. Alongside a harmonium you might add: – a Mohan Veena (21 strings, fibre hard case), the Indian slide guitar, for players coming from blues or lap-steel – a Black Flat-Back Traveler Sitar with built-in pickup for amplified playing – khartal and manjira, which are light enough to pass around a circle

Because everything is tuned to A440, these instruments sit comfortably beside guitars and ukuleles.
