Comparison guide

Keys, reeds, stops and coupler compared.

There is no single best harmonium, because the right one depends on how you play and where you play. This guide compares the harmoniums sold on RagaLoom by keyboard size, stops, reed sets and coupler, so you can match one to your music. All of them are handcrafted in India and tuned to A=440 Hz as standard. New to the instrument? Start with our beginners’ guide.

The features that matter

  • Keys and octaves: our range runs from 27 keys (2¼ octaves) to 42 keys (3½ octaves).
  • Stops and drones: stops control which reeds sound, and drone stops hold chosen notes. Some models have no stops, and others have 4, 7, 9 or 11.
  • Reed sets: every RagaLoom harmonium has two sets of brass reeds, described as bass and male. A “3 reed harmonium” is not part of our range. The three-reed instrument we sell is the 17-inch shruti box.
  • Coupler: a coupler layers the octave for a fuller, more projecting sound.
  • Folding body: the traveler models fold into a suitcase-style body for transport.

Frequently asked questions

Which harmonium is best for a beginner?

A compact model with 27 or 32 keys is easiest to carry and practise on, and a 39-key model gives you more range. Our beginners’ guide explains how to choose.

Every RagaLoom harmonium has two sets of brass reeds, bass and male. The 17-inch shruti box has three reed sets.

What does a coupler do?

A coupler layers the octave for a fuller, more projecting sound. Many of our 39-key and 42-key models have one.

Do you sell a scale changer harmonium?

None of our product pages list a scale changer. Read our scale changer harmonium page to see what it does, and enquire through our contact page if you need one.

What tuning do your harmoniums use?

A=440 Hz as standard. Several listings say 432 Hz is available by request, so ask before ordering.
